SELF TAPE PRE-SCREEN

(2027 Audition Requirements)

Step 1. Choose Your Track!

There are TWO types of audition groups: Musical Theatre Singer/Actors (Movers) and Musical Theatre Singer/Dancers (Dancers).  Choose the best track for you by reviewing our pre-screen requirements below.

Musical Theater Singer/Dancers (Dancers)

Please slate your name; do NOT slate what song you’ll be performing. We’d like to see a cut of a contemporary musical theatre or pop/rock song. A general rule to follow for cuts is 16 Bars for a ballad and 32 bars for an uptempo. You will not be penalized for being a couple of measures under or over. Please include a video of you dancing Musical Theatre Jazz. A dance reel is acceptable. Tap, an across-the-floor ballet sequence, and the opening number of A Chorus Line will not be accepted. Each pre-screen video should not exceed 90 seconds (90 seconds for singing, 90 seconds for dancing) and should be uploaded separately according to the application instructions.

Musical Theater Singer/Actors (Movers)

Please slate your name; do NOT slate what songs you’ll be performing. We’d like to see a cut of a contemporary musical theatre song and a second cut of your choosing (pop/rock, contemp MT, legit MT, etc.). A general rule to follow for cuts is 16 Bars for a ballad and 32 bars for an uptempo. You will not be penalized for being a couple of measures under or over. Pre-screen video length should not exceed 90 seconds. Both songs must fit into the 90-second video. If auditioning in multiple categories (MT and Non-Singing Actor), each pre-screen video should not exceed 90 seconds (90 seconds for singing, 2 minutes for acting) and should be uploaded separately according to the application instructions.

Step 2. Record!

Now that you’ve chosen your track, it’s time to create your self-tape pre-screen audition videos.

Please make sure you are in good lighting and a solid background. A wall works just fine.

Nothing else should be in the shot except for you. You are the focus; let’s make sure everyone’s attention is on you. Please make sure your audio is clear. You should be in a three-quarter shot for the entirety of the singing and acting pre-screens. Please shoot your pre-screen in landscape (horizontally). Uploading separate singing, acting, and dancing videos is preferred.

Upload your pre-screen video to Vimeo or YouTube. You may select it as unlisted, but please do not password-protect your video.

Step 3. Apply

Once you’ve filmed your self-tape, it’s time to apply! Fill out an application online and make sure to read our instructions fully and carefully. Self-tape pre-screens, headshots, and resumes can all be submitted within your application; however, applicants may also opt to submit their video pre-screens at a later date. All applicants (virtual and in-person) must submit a non-refundable application fee of $35 via TicketLeap. Applications will not be reviewed until we have received this fee.

Step 4. The Waiting Game

The A1 admits all applicants on a rolling basis. All decisions will be sent via e-mail by January 1st. Applications for A1s 2027 are due November 15, 2026.
